Floorcloths, or 'Oylcoths' as they were known, are one of the earliest forms of floor coverings. Documentation shows us floorcloths originated in England, perhaps as early as the 1400's, and were used to keep drafts at bay and also as a means of decoration.
In the mid 1700's, floorcloths, either imported from England or created locally, became common in America. They remained popular until 1860 when linoleum was invented. Today, we are seeing a resurgence of interest in them and they are becoming a very popular alternative to rugs.
All but a few of the patterns and designs we use are authentic floor stencils found in homes in New England dating back to the 1700's.
